The Cleaner Draws Well for 2013 Devonport Cup

In-form Tasmanian gelding The Cleaner has drawn barrier seven for the $100,000 2013 Devonport Cup (1880m) which will take place on Wednesday.

The Mick Burles-trained five-year-old will be out to record a third straight victory on his road towards the 2013 Hobart Cup after taking out the Tasmanian Stakes and the Field Family Handicap at his two most recent starts.

Jason Maskiell has ridden the son of Savoire Vivre in his two most recent starts and said the barrier seven draw is “perfect”.

“Seven is my lucky number and I had a talk to the owners and trainer Mick Burles before the barrier draw and they said middle of the field would be perfect,” Maskiell told Tasracing.

“From gate seven we can decide very early what we want to do but I have no doubt that my horse has enough speed to lead anything else in the race and that’s most likely what we will be attempting to do from that good barrier.”

The Cleaner will carry the topweight of 60kg at Devonport and while it is a hefty task, his previous two starts show he is in career best form.

In both outings his performances were given extra credence given they both came over last year’s Tasmanian horse of the year Geegee’s Blackflash.

Burles said after his most recent win that he is being aimed at both of Tasmania’s major races, the Hobart Cup as well as the 2013 Launceston Cup.

Among his rivals at Devonport is 2012 Launceston Cup placegetter Fieldmaster who has drawn barrier two and Golden Mile winner Gee Gee’s La Quita.
