Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Trainer Chris Waller is looking towards a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign with former English galloper Gatewood.
The five-year-old failed to make the Melbourne Cup field last spring, despite winning the all-important Geelong Cup prior to the race.
After his last ditch attempt to make the field resulted in a sixth placing in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes, Gatewood was sent to the paddock for a lengthy summer spell.
With another Melbourne Cup campaign up in the air, Waller is hoping to tackle some of the autumn weight-for-age features.
“He has settled in really well at Rosehill over the past couple of weeks and is becoming familiar with his surroundings,” Waller said.
“From what I’ve seen he is in between a handicapper and a weight-for-age horse and we need to be careful where we place him because we want to get his confidence up.
“We will target the decent races with him and will also be mindful of preserving his value because he is still an entire.”
Gatewood was originally owned and run in England, where he was trained by John Gosden.
The Galileo entire is now owned by Australian interests, including OTI Racing and Glenlogan Park Stud.
Gatewood has won five of his 11 race starts and has earned more than $300,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.
