Magic Millions Classic 2013 favourite Assail appears well placed to justify her price at the Gold Coast on Saturday after an impressive exhibition gallop at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The Clarry Conners-trained galloper is the $3.50 top elect for the $2 million two-year-old race and impressed Craig Williams in the gallop who was riding her for the first time.
Williams picked up the Magic Millions ride on the daughter of Charge Forward in the absence of the suspended Peter Robl and said he now knows why she is favourite for Saturday’s Gold Coast feature.
“She’s got a very smart head on her shoulders,” Conners said.
“Clarry knows what he’s doing with this filly and it was great getting a feel of her today.”
Assail earned her spot at the top of the Magic Millions betting market after two impressive wins to kick of her career.
She won by a length on debut at Warwick Farm before leading from start to finish in the Wyong Magic Millions to claim a 3 1/2 length win and announce herself as one of country’s top juveniles.
In Saturday’s gallop Assail was held a couple of lengths behind The Last General before kicking it up a gear for the final 600m which she finished in 33.8 seconds and two lengths in front of her stablemate.
Meanwhile, Conners has labelled second favourite Clevadude ($3.70) as the horse to beat, describing “as a big, strong horse.”
Conners is the Rick Hore-Lacy-trained galloper struggles to handle his first test in the clockwise direction as he chases a second Magic Millions victory after winning with Mirror Mirror in 2006.
