The Cleaner On Track to Sweep 2013 Devonport and Hobart Cups

Top Tasmanian gelding The Cleaner has been confirmed to contest Wednesday’s $100,000 2013 Devonport Cup (1880m) before lining up in Tasmania’s premier race, the Group 3 $400,000 2013 Hobart Cup (2200m), next month.

The Mick Burles-trained galloper is one of the best horses in the state, boasting an impressive record of 11 wins and four minor placings from 21 starts.

A son of Savoire Vivre, The Cleaner has shown to be in top form this preparation, winning the Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) by four lengths first-up before taking out the Field Family Handicap on Wednesday.

Burles put plenty of thought into whether next week’s Devonport Cup was the ideal lead-up to Hobart and he is also hoping he can continue on to the 2013 Launceston Cup in late February.

“He will run in the Devonport Cup and he will probably have another run before tackling the Hobart Cup,” Burles told Tasracing.

“I had a long hard think about running in the Devonport Cup.

“He will probably need two runs before the Hobart Cup but we’ll make that decision after he runs at Devonport next week.”

The Cleaner is showing excellent credentials ahead of his primary targets, having defeated 2012 Hobart Cup winner Geegees Blackflash in his two most recent starts.

Bought for $10,000 at the 2009 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale, the five-year-old has already collected nearly $200,000 in prizemoney and even shown his ability interstate.

He had a brief trip to Melbourne in the early spring where he placed at Moonee Valley, won a race at Sandown and finished fifth in the Listed Ansett Classic at Mornington.

Scoring a third consecutive win on Wednesday will be challenging as he has been allocated the topweight of 60kg.
