Quality Magic Millions Cup 2013 Nominations Released

A strong 20-horse nominations list has been announced to contest the $400,000 2012 Magic Millions Cup (1400m) which will take place at the Gold Coast on January 12.

Phelan Ready

Phelan Ready features in the Magic Millions Cup Nominations

Phelan Ready has been entered to again attempt to break his drought that began back in 2009 following his win in the Golden Slipper.

As a two-year-old the Jason McLachlan-trained gelding completed a Magic Millions Classic-Golden Slipper double but has been unable to taste success since.

He has come close in recent times, having placed in all three starts this campaign including a short-head defeat behind fellow Magic Millions Cup entrant Startsmeup in the George Moore Stakes.

Startsmeup will go into the race as one of the favourites but will have to turn the tables on Tuesday’s Goldmarket Handicap winner Biggles who he finished two lengths behind in third position.

Making the trip north from Sydney to take on a field that is set to be dominated by Queenslanders is Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding Fast Clip.

The five-year-old’s spring campaign ended after just one start but he signalled his potential in the autumn when winning the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude and finishing fifth in the Doncaster Mile.

Also travelling from Sydney to contest the Magic Millions Cup is Chris Waller-trained gelding Triple Elegance who was a Group 3 winner in the 2011 Liverpool City Cup.

Liam Birchley’s mare Whateeverwhenever will have to bounce back from a disappointing fifth-place effort at Doomben late last month but showed she has the talent to compete at this level when winning the Group 3 Moonga Stakes at the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Also included in nominations are Patinack-owned gelding Boys On Tour, Pat Duff’s in-form galloper Steel Zip and Robert Heathcote-trained pair Gundy Son and Sons Of God.

Markets are available on a number of key Magic Millions events at bookmaker.com.au so head there now to back an early winner at great odds.
