Emerging stayer Rawnaq is likely to kick off his autumn campaign in the Group 2 2013 St George Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield in February before contesting the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The David Hayes-trained colt announced himself as a stayer of the future at the Melbourne Spring Carnival when he finished third in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
But the effort was better than the result as he received little luck in running but still managed to finish within 2 1/2 lengths of winner Fiveandahalfstar.
Trainer David Hayes told Racingnetwork.com.au the son of Redoute’s Choice has done well during a spell that began following his fifth-place finish in the Group 2 Zipping Classic in November.
“He’s spelled really well, he’ll probably start off in the St George and gradually make his way up to Sydney,” Hayes said.
One target that could potentially suit the lightly-raced colt is the 2013 Australian Derby (2400m) which will take place at Randwick in April.
If he does get to the Australian Derby it is likely he will face a rematch with Fiveandahalfstar who is also likely to contest the major three-year-old staying feature.
Fiveandahalfstar is back in work and trainer Anthony Cummings is considering giving him a shot against open company in the prestigious Group 1 2013 BMW (2400m) as well as the Derby.
“He is progressing on an upward spiral and there is every chance he could run in The BMW as well as the Derby,” Cummings said last month.
Fiveandahalfstar took a long time to find form in the early part of his career, failing to taste success in his first 12 starts, before shining in the spring to win his last three starts with the campaign culminating with Group 1 victory in the Victoria Derby.
