An upset win over Sizzling in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) on Saturday has rocketed Lucky Hussler into contention for Saturday week’s $1 million 2013 Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast.
The three-year-old colt was paying $21 but was good enough to hold on against short-priced favourite Sizzling to record his third victory from four starts this preparation.
He is now a $9 chance for the Magic Millions Guineas with only Sizzling ($5.50) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein ($5.50) above him in the market.
Trainer Kent Fleming was rewarded with a bold plan to push forward with the son of Husson as Sizzling got caught in traffic in the straight.
“I told Matthew [Palmer] to ride him more positively and let Sizzling chase us this time,” Fleming said.
“He rode him just the way I wanted and when the split came in the straight it was just like poetry in motion.”
Fleming described Lucky Hussler as “the best horse” he’s trained and is expecting him to benefit from the extra pressure and distance in the Gold Coast feature on Saturday week.
“He rode him just the way I wanted and when the split came in the straight it was just like poetry in motion,” he said.
Palmer was left excited about the colt’s chances in the Magic Millions, saying he’s “very genuine” and will appreciate being back on his home track on the Gold Coast.
Also pressing their Magic Millions Guineas claims in the Vo Rogue Plate was Robert Heathcote-trained gelding Heza Jetsetter who ran home strongly to finish third.
The son of Jetspur has now finished in the top three in his five most recent starts and is at $11.00 in the Magic Millions market.
