Adamantium to be Aimed at 2013 Newmarket Handicap

A dominant win by Adamantium in Tuesday’s Group 3 2013 Standish Handicap (1200m) has trainer Danny O’Brien dreaming of Group 1 glory and he will aim the four-year-old at the prestigious 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m).

The Elusive City gelding bounced to an early lead and that is where he stayed for the entire trip as he finished 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Catapulted and Goldstone down the famous Flemington straight.

It was the second straight win for the progressive galloper who bolted home by two lengths to win the Zouki Western Health Cup at Flemington on December 15.

Adamantium has always shown talent but O’Brien admits an attempt to run him over longer distances prevented him tasting success as a three-year-old and his record stands at four wins from 18 starts.

“We messed him up a little bit as a three-year-old, we tried to get him up to a mile,” O’Brien said.

“But I think we’ve worked out that he’s really a six furlong and obviously a very effectively straight horse.”

O’Brien confirmed the Newmarket on March 9 at Flemington stands as a suitable target where he is likely to be well weighted in what is always a classy field.

“The Newmarket’s probably 8 or 10 weeks away, but we have to give serious thought to give him a chance to run in that race. He’ll be down in the weights and he’ll take some catching,” he said.

Eleven-year-old former Hong Kong Group 1 winner Good Ba Ba showed he may still have some racing left in him when finishing fourth in what was his first start on Australian soil.
