Missy Longstocking Remains Unbeaten with BJ McLachlan Stakes 2012 Win

Liam Birchey’s promising filly Missy Longstocking silenced her doubters at Doomben today and took her unbeaten record to four with a strong win in the Group 3 2012 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m).

Many questioned whether the Queensland juvenile could run a strong 1200m after her win two weeks ago in the Calaway Cal Stakes (1200m) but she was strong through the line today to beat home Sweet Idea and Architect.

Damian Browne appeared to have unlocked the key to the daughter of Sequalo, riding her quietly midfield with cover.

As they rounded the home turn the experienced rider called upon Missy Longstocking and she duly responded to run down Sweet Idea for a half-length victory.

She is now likely to feature towards the top of Magic Millions markets after being offered at as much as $21 prior to today’s meeting.

Missy Longstocking turned heads in the first two starts of her career in October and November when recording six and seven-length wins in the two opening starts of her career.

Gai Waterhouse-trained filly led for much of the race and is also likely to shorten in the Magic Millions markets with her record now standing at a win and two runner-up finishes from three career outings.

Architect overcame a big $101 price tag to storm home and claim third-place honours for Toowoomba trainer Deborah Handford.

Race favourite Sir Luminar was forced to do a lot of work early from a wide barrier 12 position and tried gallantly but used up too much energy early to feature in the finish.
