Chester Road Draws Wide – 2013 Perth Cup Barrier Draw

Early 2013 Perth Cup (2400m) fancy Chester Road has suffered a blow in the lead-up to the $500,000 feature on Tuesday after drawing wide in barrier 17.

Cantonese

Cantonese, like many of the top Perth Cup chances, has drawn wide

The Adam Durrant-trained gelding is the top elect in early markets and heads into the race on the back of a runner-up finish to stablemate Mr Moet in the CB Cox Stakes on Saturday.

But many believe he is well placed to turn the tables on Mr Moet as he meets the Railway Stakes winner five kilograms better at the weights with just 54kg.

Mr Moet has received better luck than his stablemate at the barrier draw but jockey Daniel Staeck will still have his work cut out to find an ideal position when he comes from barrier 10.

The draw was not kind to most of the top chances, with Sydney stayer Cantonese receiving barrier 19 and talented local mare Pop Culture barrier 20.

Cantonese arrives in Perth on the back on excellent Sydney campaign with his most recent start highlighting his staying ability as he took out the Listed Christmas Cup at Rosehill by six lengths.

Pop Culture, one of the most highly-regarded horses in the west, also brings terrific form into the race and backed up a Kingston Town Classic fourth with a win in the WA St Leger last weekend.

One horse who has drawn well is Justin Warwick’s six-year-old gelding Global Flirt who earned a berth in the Perth Cup on the back of good form so far this campaign.

Up until a last-start fourth in the ATA Handicap, the son of McFlirt produced three straight wins including in the Listed Towton Cup (2200m) on December 8.
