BJ McLachlan Stakes 2012 – Preview and Tips

A classy field of juveniles will be on show at Doomben on Saturday in the Group 3 2012 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) which stands as a key lead-up event to next month’s 2013 Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast.

A number of runners in the field have already proven their ability to compete at this level including Michael Nolan-trained colt Sir Luminar who blew away his rivals with a start-to-finish display on debut in the Phelan Ready Stakes two weeks ago.

He is joined by fellow Queenslander Missy Longstocking who will be looking to extend her unbeaten streak to four after also scoring black-type honours two weeks ago in the Listed Calway Gal Stakes.

Taking on the locals are a number of southern contenders including Magic Millions Clockwise Classic winner I’m Too Sexy and Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Sweet Idea and Northern Glory.

Not sure who to back in this exciting two-year-old feature? Keep reading as the team have been hard at work to bring your our very best selections.

The Winner

#5 I’m Too Sexy ($5.50)

An outstanding debut winner at Ballarat last month where she booked her spot in the Magic Millions with a three-length win in the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic.

Led from start to finish that day in impressive style and has been in Queensland acclimatising to the warmer weather so should be on-song this weekend.

Produced a strong trial performance at the Gold Coast on December 18 and drawn well in barrier one to fly out of the blocks and take her record to 2/2.

The Placings

#1 Sir Luminar ($3.20) and #9 Purrific ($6.50)

No knock on Sir Luminar as he was mighty impressive on debut but faces a tougher test here. Should still be in the hunt as the big colt oozes talent but has to overcome a barrier 12 draw.

Purrific has drawn sensationally in barrier five and signalled her potential in Victoria last month with consecutive seconds in both the Listed 7News Plate and the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes.
