Bernborough Handicap 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

The exciting Brisbane Summer Series action continues at Doomben this Saturday and one of the highlights on the eight-race card is the Listed $200,000 2012 Bernborough Handicap (1600m).

Heading the 13-horse field is Robert Heathcote-trained mare Fire Up Fifi who is well drawn in barrier five to record a second straight victory.

The grey mare struggled slightly first-up in the Travel Associates Classic but returned to her winning ways on December 15 when storming home to claim the Listed Just Now Handicap (1300m).

A daughter of Bradbury’s Luck, Fire Up Fifi was one of the most consistent horses during the winter, winning five of seven outings including once over the Bernborough distance of 1600m.

She will be joined in the field by dual stakes-winning stablemate Fillydelphia who can be hit and miss but has her work cut out after drawing barrier 13.

Travelling north to take on the Queenslanders is Kembla Grange-based gelding Alma’s Fury who was seen finishing a narrow second in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

It will be the Bede Murray-trained five-year-old’s second trip to Queensland after a three-year-old campaign in 2011 that saw him finish third in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes.

Winner of the Grand Prix Stakes that year was Peter Moody-trained  Turnitup who also returns to Queensland after finishing third in the Spotless Handicap at Flemington on December 15.

Apart from Fire Up Fifi, there is only one last-start winner in the field and that is local gelding Mr Light Blue who won the Coca-Cola Amatil Handicap at Eagle Farm two weeks ago.

Second on that day was Danagaze and the Lawrie Mayfield-Smith-trained galloper will have the chance to turn the tables this weekend when he carries the minimum of 54kg from a favourable barrier three position.

Others in the Bernborough Handicap include Norm Hilton-trained gelding Carry Me Bluey and former Sydney galloper Bid Spotter.
