Small Summer Cup 2012 Field Announced – Boxing Day Races

Just seven horses will contest the Group 3 $125,000 2012 Summer Cup (2400m) which will take place at Rosehill on Boxing Day.

Poste Restante

Poste Restante is one of the top chances in the Summer Cup

The field may be small but there are still a number of in-form horses including Tony McEvoy’s European import Le Roi who will be chasing a fourth consecutive win when he runs from barrier four on Wednesday.

McEvoy, based in South Australia, is taking the four-year-old to Sydney with an eye to bigger things. A win on Boxing Day would mean he meets the qualification criteria for both the 2013 Caulfield Cup and the 2013 Melbourne Cup.

‘It would get one of the important things out of the way, which is qualifying,” McEvoy told Fairfax.

McEvoy admits it is a steep rise in class for the son of Areion but believes it is worth testing him after his recent performances which included a three-length win at Caulfield over 2000 metres on December 1.

“It is a test for him against these sort of horses but it is one worth taking,” he said.

Another horse bringing terrific form into the race is Queensland-based mare Poste Restante who has excelled in the sunshine state since joining Desleigh Forster’s stable from New Zealand.

After winning first-up at Doomben in October, the four-year-old ran fourth in her next start before producing a treble of victories at Eagle Farm in her three most recent outings.

John O’Shea-trained gelding Iggi Pop will be out to convert consistent performances into victory after running third two starts back at Rosehill before finishing second to Cantonese in the Listed Christmas Cup on December 15.

Others in the Summer Cup field are David Payne-trained duo Winning Glory and Praecido, former New Zealand galloper Fromelles, and Guy Walter’s Brightest.
