All Legal Overcomes Problems to Win 2012 Villiers Stakes

At one stage Kevin Moses was told to retire six-year-old gelding All Legal due to injury problems but the decision to seek a second opinion paid dividends on Saturday when he scored the biggest win of his career in the Group 2 2012 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm.

Twelve months ago All Legal was battling a potentially career-threatening knee injury, with initial vet reports suggesting Moses should retire him.

“I got a second opinion and the other vet said he could operate. And this is what he’s come back as,” Moses said.

Ridden midfield by experienced jockey Glyn Schofield, the son of Al Maher produced an excellent sprint to edge out Alma’s Fury and Darci Be Good in a tight finish.

The win came on the back of two below-par performances and Moses attributed the turnaround to a change in training and an excellent ride from Schofield.

“I have just trained his training a little bit,” Moses said.

“Glyn rode him very well, I said hold him as long as possible and the ride was good.”

Schofield praised the training efforts of Moses and said he knew from the moment he got on his back on Saturday that he was ready to produce a big performance.

“Just walking around the enclosure he just had a different feel about him today” Schofield said.

“Kevin said he had mixed his work up and was swimming him a bit more and keeping him up to the mark that way and whatever he did at home it was just spot on.”
