Texan Leader of R.S. Crawford Stakes 2012 Odds

Adam Durrant’s consistent five-year-old Texan has opened top of the odds to win the 2012 R.S. Crawford Stakes at Ascot’s CB Cox Stakes Day this Saturday as they return after a two month break.

The Stratum gelding has won nine of the 20 career starts to date, placing in another six, and connections are hoping they will add to this nice record when they jump favourite in the $80,000 R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m) on the weekend.

Formerly prepared by Gai Waterhouse in Sydney Texan joined Durrant’s Lark Hill operation earlier this year and have thrived in WA adding two Listed race wins to their record taking out the Hannan’s Handicap – Birthday Stakes double during the spring.

They were last seen finishing a disappointing 11th when beaten five lengths by King Saul in the Listed Northerly Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on October 20 when carrying 58kg and jumping from barrier 12 of 15.

The bookies are tipping them for improvement first-up on Saturday however with Texan topping the RS Crawford Stakes betting markets at a quote of $2.40, Daniel Staeck replacing injured hoop Peter Knuckey aboard the favourite.

In a wide-open race four of their seven rivals are also at single figures with:

  • #5 Excelorada ($4) – Neville Parnham’s Exceed And Excel five-year-old after their second sprint win on the trot after a narrow victory at the track last time out and are a specialist at the 1000m having had their last six runs over the distance
  • #1 Werd ($7) – Another Gangemi-trained galloper, this one out to break a length 14 month losing streak, haven’t raced since an eighth over the track and distance on October 20 but were burdened by a big weight there and drop back to 54kg on Saturday with barrier one also in their favour
  • #3 Acorns ($8) – Local Secret Savings seven-year-old having just their second start for new trainer Sean Casey, should get a gun run from gate two with William Pike to ride
