Rick Worthington’s resuming veteran galloper Whitefriars has opened narrow favourite in the Razor Sharp Handicap 2012 odds for Saturday’s Warwick Farm feature.
The seven-year-old Areana gelding hasn’t raced since their win in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 28 having overcome a serious bout of pneumonia and undergone two throat operations over the past 11 months.
They are back on track now after two successful Sydney barrier trials last month and will return in the last at Sydney’s Villiers Stakes Day this weekend, the $100,000 Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m).
Drawn in gate seven with Jim Cassidy to ride them on the 61.5kg top-weight Whitefriars tops the current Razor Sharp Handicap odds at a quote of $4.60.
Hot on their heels in the markets is then Riva De Lago (barrier five) who is at $4.80 and a chance to firm into favourite before jump time on Saturday.
The Encosta De Lago five-year-old has had just one run for their new trainer Chris Waller when a first-up second off a five month break at Rosehill a fortnight ago.
Formerly prepared by Con Karakatsanis Riva De Lago won their last race at Scone back in May but is well fancied to break the drought this weekend.
The bookies are having a hard time separating the rest of the field with four horses all occupying the third line of Razor Sharp Handicap betting at a quote of $7 with:
- #3 Skytrain – Inside alley for Peter Snowden’s resuming Lonhro seven-year-old, Skytrain last seen running a good fourth in a Listed sprint at Rosehill back in August but their first-up record is pretty hit and miss
- #4 Adebisi – Another ideal draw here with Desleigh Forster’s talented Queensland galloper to jump from barrier three with Hugh Bowman aboard, third-up for the season having won their resuming run in the mud at Eagle Farm by three lengths before their good fifth when beaten only 1.6 lengths in the Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane a fortnight ago
- #9 Bound To Blush – One of the 54kg light weights, John O’Shea’s Strategic mare has had just eight starts to date finishing out of the money only once with four wins and three minor placings, ultra consistent with plenty of upside, last seen running a devastatingly close second in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m) at Eagle Farm at the start of the month with plenty of claims here
- #10 Stratford – Barrier 10 of 11 to overcome but the Hawkes-trained five-year-old is only lightly-raced and has won four from 10 so far so there’s class
