Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s classy Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Galah has opened top of the odds for this Saturday’s 2012 Villiers Stakes at Warwick Farm Racecourse after an eye-catching run last time out.
One of three entries in this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Inglis Villiers Stakes (1600m), running as Warwick Farm Race 6 at 4:20pm (AEST), for Snowden Galah had three runs during the spring.
Their best effort was a second in a mile feature at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day before they returned to Sydney a fortnight ago for the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m).
In a good effort from the former Group 3 winner Galah crossed less than a length away third behind the currently injured Malavio and last year’s Festival Stakes – Villiers Stakes double winner Monton.
They back up in the Villiers Stakes, as does the defending champ Monton, and have opened as the $5.50 favourite at bookmaker.com.au after drawing barrier eight.
Snowden’s other two hopefuls are Lonhro mare Quidnunc out wide in the awkward barrier 19 draw as they look to improve on their good fourth in the Festival Stakes, and Commands mare Classics who was 11th in the Festival, the pair paying $19 and $21 respectively.
There are just two other runners in the capacity Villiers Stakes field and markets under double figures currently with Monton ($7.50) and Cabernet ($8).
Drawn ideally in gate four with apprentice jockey Sam Clipperton booked for the ride, Ron Quinton’s Catbird six-year-old Monton will carry the 59kg top-weight as they look to become the first horse to win multiple Villiers Stakes.
Cabernet meanwhile will jump from barrier 10 with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, Matthew Smith’s in-form mare coming off a stellar campaign.
Second-up she was runner-up in the Group 3 Herald Sun Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day before backing up 11 days later to post a smart win over Group 2 winner Skyerush in the Listed Summond Stakes (1500m) at Sandown.
The Al Maher six-year-old also comes via a run in the Festival Stakes having run a brave fifth when beaten one and a quarter lengths.
Other notable hopefuls at slightly juicier odds that are a genuine chance of an upset include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley ($13) who won the Goulburn Cup over the mile last start, Peter Moody’s Victorian visitor Shout Out Loud ($14) coming off a win in the Victoria Cup over 1440m at Caulfield at the start of the month, and the nicely drawn (barrier three) New Zealand mare Holy Moly ($14) who was a Rosehill winner a fortnight ago.
