Racing Victoria have thrown out an enticing proposition ahead of the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival with a Group 1 Triple Crown Series launched offering a $1 million bonus.
The $1 million bonus will be available to any horse that can achieve success in the Black Caviar Lightning, Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap or alternatively in the Orr Stakes, Futurity Stakes and Australian Cup.
But any sprinter chasing the first of the trebles could have their work cut out as it is possible they will have to topple Australia’s best horse, Black Caviar, in the Lightning.
Unfortunately, the fact that both the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket are handicaps, will prevent Black Caviar contesting the Triple Crown as she would be asked to carry far too great an impost.
Apart from the obvious obstacle of tackling the super mare, history also says the feat is incredibly difficult, with Perth’s Placid Ark the last runner to do so back in 1987.
While the second treble has been achieved twice in the past 23 years, it has also been tough in recent times, with the legenedary Let’s Elope (1992) and Vo Rogue (1989) the last gallopers to achieve the feat.
In addition to the $1 million Triple Crown bonus, Racing Victoria is also offering a $50,000 travel bonus for the best-performed horse of the series with the aim of encouraging connections to test their charge in the international arena.
