Summer Cup 2012 – Nominations Released

A strong 12-horse nominations list has been announced for the Group 3 $125,000 2012 Summer Cup (2400m) which will take place at Rosehill on Boxing Day.

Poste Restante

Poste Restante is one of the top nominations for the Summer Cup

Among the list of experienced and emerging stayers is Cantonese who has been entered by trainer Bjorn Baker as a back-up in case travel plans to the 2013 Perth Cup fall through.

Cantonese, who was seen leading from start to finish to claim a six-length Christmas Cup win on Saturday, is currently in Melbourne awaiting a flight to Perth on Friday ahead of the New Year’s Day event.

Travelling south from Queensland for the Boxing Day feature is former New Zealand mare Poste Restante who is now based in Brisbane under the guidance of Desleigh Forster.

The four-year-old, who placed behind Brambles at Group 3 level during the winter, has been in terrific form this preparation and will be chasing a fourth consecutive win when she lines up in the Summer Cup.

Forster experimented with blinkers on the daughter of Postponed on Saturday but they will come off again for Boxing Day with the Eagle Farm trainer saying the four-year-old overraced following the gear change.

“After talking it over with Michael [Cahill] we felt the best idea was to take the blinkers off because she wanted to go a bit keenly in them the other day,” Forster said.

Also set to chase a fourth straight win is Tony McEvoy’s German-bred import Le Roi who backed up consecutive victories at Morphetville in the spring to score a dominant three-length win in the CFV Great Strides Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield on December 1.

The improving Iggi Pop will be out to continue his solid preparation after a third-place finish at Rosehill in November was backed up with a second behind Cantonese in the Christmas Cup on the weekend.

Others nominated for the Summer Cup include New Zealand mare Fromelles, Werribee Cup winner Unusual Suspect and David Payne-trained duo Winning Glory and Praecido.
