Punters will gain further insight into 2013 Perth Cup (2400m) chance Full Reign when he steps out in the ATA Handicap (2200m) at Ascot today.
The four-year-old has been tipped as an emerging contender for the Group 2 Perth Cup which will take place as part of Perth’s Summer Racing Carnival on New Year’s day.
Trained by Peter and Matthew Giadresco, the son of Blackfriars has been in terrific form this campaign and will be chasing a third consecutive win at Ascot today.
His last win came over 1800m but Peter Giadresco is confident that he will not be troubled by the step up in trip in either the ATA Handicap or the primary goal of the Perth Cup.
“He’s very relaxed and won’t be troubled by distance increases in the ATA Handicap and Perth Cup,” Giadresco said.
“His preparation has been perfect.”
The emerging stayer has shown considerable talent in the early stages of his career, winning five of 11 starts and collecting more than $150,000 in prizemoney.
Meanwhile, Sydney gelding Cantonese’s Perth Cup ambitions rest on him being able to get a flight from Melbourne to the Western Australian capital on Friday.
It is believed the Bjorn Baker-trained five-year-old is considered an “80 per cent chance” of getting a flight but if it doesn’t eventuate he could contest the 2012 Summer Cup at Randwick on Boxing Day.
“The plan now is to go to Perth if the logistics allow,” Baker said.
Cantonese has won six of 10 starts since joining Baker’s Warwick Farm stable and was a dominant start-to-finish winner when claiming his first stakes victory by six lengths in Saturday’s Listed Christmas Cup at Rosehill.
