A Flemington return for Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar at the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival remains a strong possibility with Anthony Cummings outlining the Group 1 2013 Australian Guineas as one of a number options.
The son of Hotel Grand has returned to work after an outstanding spring campaign that saw him win the final three starts of his preparation which of course culminated with the $1.5 million Victoria Derby.
Fiveandahalfstar was still yet to break through from 12 starts before winning a 1900m maiden at Rosehill in October and he showed his appreciation for the longer trip to back it up with a three-length win over 1800m at Rosehill and claim the 2500m Derby by 1 1/2 lengths.
While Cummings admits there are many options to consider, he said the Australian Guineas (1600m) is definitely a possibility given the horse’s obvious liking for Flemington.
“There’s a big list of races available to him for his autumn preparation and the Australian Guineas is definitely one of them we are considering.”
Bought for just $20,000 as a yearling, Fiveandahalfstar’s spring success has seen him already collect nearly $1 million in prizemoney.
Other autumn options for the emerging stayer include the $1.5 million 2013 Australian Derby and Cummings also hasn’t ruled out a shot at the 2013 BMW.
“He is progressing on an upward spiral and there is every chance he could run in The BMW as well as the Derby,” Cummings said earlier this month.
If Fiveandahalfstar does get the chance to contest the prestigious weight-for-age event that is the BMW, he will be out to become the first three-year-old since Grand Zulu in 2004 to achieve the feat.
