Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The action of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival continues at Ascot Racecourse this Saturday with a crack eight-race program set to run featuring four black type features for CB Cox Stakes Day including the R.S. Crawford Stakes 2012.
Due to jump at 2:55pm (AEST) as Ascot Race 4, the $80,000 Listed R.S. Crawford Stakes (1000m) has this year attracted a small but classy field of eight sprinters.
Heading the field and weights with 59kg is the Chris Gangemi-trained Werd in gate six, the Hussonet eight-year-old after their first win since the WATC Stakes back in March.
Werd has been in good form over the year racing competitively in races including their second to the undefeated Barakey in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) two back and their game sixth to the same horse in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) last time out on November 24.
Gangemi has also accepted for his Flying Spur six-year-old The Entourage who has come up trumps with the inside running from barrier one in their first run since October 20.
The only other horse above the 54kg minimum aside from Werd in the RS Crawford Stakes this year is then Adam Durrant’s Stratum gelding Texan (58.5kg) who resumes racing with Daniel Staeck to ride them from gate seven.
Texan was in flying form during the spring with three straight wins including to stakes races with the Listed Hannan’s Handicap (1400m) at Kalgoorlie and the Listed Birthday Stakes (1200m) at Belmont Park.
They flopped in their last run however when finishing 11th to King Saul in the Listed Northerly Stakes (1400m) on October 20, Durrant hoping they will improve with the drop back from 58kg to 54kg this weekend.
Ace local trainer Neville Parnham meanwhile prepares the sole last start winner in this year’s race with Excelorada in gate four with Steven Parnham in the saddle.
The Exceed And Excel five-year-old was last seen taking out a Benchmark 80 sprint over 1000m at the track and while they step up in class son Saturday they are a specialist at the distance.
