Magic Millions Guineas 2013 (1400m) favourite Sizzling has shortened considerably after a stunning win in the Listed 2012 Gold Edition Plate at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The Kelso Wood-trained colt was a $5.00 top elect when the bookmaker.com.au market opened last week but is now at $3.50 for the $1 million Gold Coast feature.
After a brief Melbourne spring campaign which came to an end when the three-year-old injured his back when sixth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, he made his home state racing return in scintillating style on the weekend when winning the $100,000 sprint by 1 1/2 lengths.
The son of Snitzel settled in his customary position worse than midfield, giving his rivals a big headstart, before producing a sharp turn of foot and the performance of the day to quickly reel in his rivals in the back half of the straight.
Wood was left in awe following Sizzling’s sixth victory from 11 starts and believes he is in career best form heading towards the Magic Millions.
“It’s unbelievable what this horse can run for his last 150 metres,” Wood said.
“I think he’s going better now than he’s ever gone….I jumped him out on Tuesday over 800 metres and he made up about 12 lengths without being really pushed.”
The final Magic Millions lead-up for Sizzling will come in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) on December 29 where he will again be partnered by top hoop Chris Munce who was also amazed by Saturday’s performance.
“Words fail me. What he did today [Saturday] was close to breathtaking,” Munce said.
One of the likely challengers to Sizzling at next month’s Magic Millions carnival is Driefontein ($5.50) who is expected to line up in the 2012 Magic Millions Wyong 3YO Stakes on Thursday.
