Mark Kavanagh looks to holding a strong hand heading into the summer sprints this festive season, the top Melbourne-based horseman having named his runners for both the Christmas Stakes 2012 on Boxing Day and the always popular 2013 Standish Handicap on New Year’s Day.
Kavanagh has opted not to pit his flying sprinting duo of Catapulted and Undeniably, who ran one-two in the Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on December 8, against each other again in the Melbourne features this summer.
Instead he will save Catbird seven-year-old Catapulted, impressive three length winner with 60.5kg in the Doveton Stakes, for the $150,000 Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington Racecourse on January 1 while his Fastnet Rock six-year-old Undeniably will go second-up into Caulfield’s $120,000 Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) Wednesday week, December 26.
“Catapulted goes to the Standish in good form,” Kavanagh said.
While they were three lengths off their star stablemate Catapulted in the Doveton Stakes, Undeniably still did well to finish best of the rest as a $30 outsider for their resuming run at the start of the mount which was their best finish since running second to Whitefriars in the Group 2 Australia Stakes aback in January of 2011.
“Undeniably ran well first-up behind Catapulted,” Kavanagh said.
“I was really happy to see him run such a good race considering he nearly died two years ago.
“We took him over to Adelaide for the carnival and he got travel sickness. Then with the amount of penicillin we had to give him, he got a bad dose of the scours and was sick for a long time.”
In related news Rick Worthington’s Areana seven-year-old Whitefriars will have their first run since that Australia Stakes success this weekend having been nominated for the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Warwick Farm’s Villiers Stakes Day.
