Regimental Pride Wins Ahead of Wyong Magic Millions 2012

David Payne’s promising More Than Ready colt Regimental Pride added another notch to their belt on Saturday with their second Rosehill win on the trot ahead of Thursday’s 2012 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic.

Following an unsuccessful debut when unplaced in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m), Regimental Pride won their next start at Rosehill over 1100m in mid-October.

They returned to the same track and distance on the weekend for the $85,000 Rosehill Gardens Handicap and thrived again beating home the $2.50 favourite Let’s Frolic by just a long neck with the Peter Snowden-trained Howdah in third a further half length away.

Jockey Glyn Schofield took the eventual winner straight to the front early but it wasn’t an easy victory by any means with the Tim Martin-trained runner-up Let’s Frolic giving them a fright and a fight.

“I had the race won at the top of the straight and took my time to chase them,” Schofield said.

“Then I saw a head appear but I realised the horse didn’t have a jockey on its back.

Payne plans to back Regimental Pride up just five days later in Thursday’s $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (1100m) which could turn into a lead-up for the big one – the $2 million Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO Classic (1200m) in Queensland on January 12, 2013.

“This was like a trial to him,” Payne said of the Rosehill Gardens Handicap.

“He only had to walk over and will walk home. It’s not like he had a float trip and that’s what takes it out of them.

“As long as he does well over the next couple of days he will go to the Wyong race and then to the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast.

“It was a good win and a good gallop for him.”

On Sunday all reports were that Regimental Pride had come through the race well and it was all system’s go for Wyong.

“He didn’t have a hard run and ate up well after the race,” Payne said.
