Missy Longstocking Makes it Three Straight to Win 2012 Calaway Gal Stakes

Missy Longstocking might not have been as convincing as her previous outings but she did enough to hold off her rivals and keep her unbeaten record alive in the Listed 2012 Calaway Gal Stakes (1000m) at Eagle Farm today.

After previously scoring six-length and seven-length wins at Toowoomba and Eagle Farm respectively, the Liam Birchley-trained filly jumped a short-priced favourite in the $100,000 fillies’ event.

With the experienced Damian Browne aboard, Missy Longstocking jumped well and was content to sit just outside leader Ziggies Dance.

At the 400m mark Browne called upon the talented youngster and she quickly assumed the lead but had to rally again late to hold off a back-end charge from Maracoola and Moroccan Rose.

But the daughter of Sequalo was good enough to hold on for a one-length win as she continues her charge towards the $2 million 2013 Magic Millions 2Yo Classic which will be held at the Gold Coast in January.

Missy Longstocking completed the 1000m hitout in 57.69 seconds and is likely to take improvement out of the run given she was resuming from more than a month off.

In the previous race, fellow Magic Millions nominee Sir Luminar was particularly impressive on debut as he led from start to finish to clock 57.14 and claim a debut victory in the 2012 Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m).
