Cantonese the Order of the Day in 2012 Christmas Cup – Results

Bjorn Baker’s consistent stayer Cantonese continued his outstanding campaign in winning style at Rosehill today as he produced a dominant performance to win the Listed 2012 Christmas Cup (2400m) by four lengths.

Cantonese

Cantonese was a dominant winner in the Christmas Cup

The five-year-old jumped well and was immediately taken to the lead by experienced front-running jockey Jim Cassidy.

The front of the field was where he stayed for the entire trip and as they rounded the home bend he held a commanding four-length lead.

As his rivals began their charge Cantonese lifted again and produced a powerful performance to finish four lengths in front of Iggi Pop and Fiumicino.

It was the sixth win from nine starts since joining Baker’s stable from John O’Shea and the first stakes victory of his career.

Baker has received increased media attention as a result of Cantonese’s performances and he was understandably delighted following the win.

“Thankyou to all the owners, they’ve been supporting me from the start so I’m very grateful to them,” Baker said.

“It was great to watch, I know I’m a little bit biased but it’s great to have a horse like that in the race.”

Baker praised the ride of the experienced Jim Cassidy who took control of his mount from the outset.

“Jimmy rode him perfectly and that’s why he’s one of the greats,” he said.

“He bounced out well today and Jimmy was able to get them without hunting them which is the key.”
