Londehero Leads 2012 Phelan Ready Stakes Betting

Matthew Dunn’s untapped Lonhro colt Londehero has been installed as the short-priced favourite to take out the Phelan Ready Stakes 2012 at Eagle Farm this weekend as they look to break their maiden status at career start number two.

Running as Race 2 at 12:50pm (local time), the $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) features a field of 11 two-year-old colts and geldings with Glen Colless’ mount Londehero topping the betting markets at bookmaker.com.au.

Londehero, who has drawn ideally in barrier three for Saturday, debuted at Eagle Farm on the back of a smart 2.5 length barrier trial win at the Gold Coast when they finished just a long neck away second to Sister Magic in the Hamilton Hotel Handicap (1000m) on December 1.

They return to the same track and distance this weekend and are tipped for improvement with race experience behind them now, Londehero paying $2.25 in the Phelan Ready Stakes odds.

“Normally they take good improvement out of their first run, and from what he’s shown me and Glen Colless on the track since then, I suggest he definitely has taken a step forward,” Dunn said of Saturday’s favourite.

In a tight market there are four other single-figure chances with:

  • #2 Eliminator ($4) – Choisir colt from the Gold Coast stables of Gillian Heinrich, winner on debut at their home track over 900m where they smashed their rivals by 8.5 lengths – hard to beat if they bring that kind of form to town
  • #8 Sir Luminar ($4.50) – Toowoomba visitor going to the races for the first time on the back of a good 5.5 length trail win at home, albeit only over 650m so need to handle the pressure and the distance
  • #9 Sir Moments ($5.50) – Unraced Choisir gelding prepared by Steven O’dea should get a nice run from gate five with Ryan Wiggins aboard
  • #3 El Toranado ($9) – Another Gold Coast visitor racing second-up, enjoyed a huge nine length trial success over 1000m on the Coast before running fourth on debut to Sister Magic, should have improved from that
