Royal Ascot Still Remains In Sea Siren’s Sights

Trainer John O’Shea is still planning on sending Sea Siren to England to compete at Royal Ascot in the future, despite her failed attempt in Hong Kong.

Sea Siren placed an unexpected ninth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint last Sunday, for which she had been an early favourite.

The four-year-old was on her first international campaign after proving herself as a top sprinter back home in Australia.

The Fastnet Rock mare won the Group 1 Manikato Stakes first-up this preparation, before finishing a close second in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington last start.

It was for this reason that O’Shea was not prepared for the disappointing result in the 2012 Hong Kong Sprint.

“Obviously, we’re just a bit stunned,” O’Shea said.

“It’s not the right time to ask us now but the reality is, I’d like to overcome the challenge of winning in Hong Kong.”

While things didn’t go quite right this time around, the trainer is still looking at running Sea Siren at Royal Ascot at one stage.

“It’s an achievable thing to do and it’s something, going forward, I’d like to continue to do, is to travel horses,” he said.

“We had a good bit of success in Melbourne this year and obviously now the challenge is to travel them internationally.

“But you’ve got to be a little resilient because no matter how good your preparation is, to have the wind knocked out of your sails straight away is disappointing.”
