Capital Commander to Defend Magic Millions Title in 2013

Nick Olive’s Canberra based mare Capital Commander is gearing up for a title defense in the 2013 Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap on the Gold Coast next month when she races next-up at Rosehill this weekend.

The now five-year-old daughter of Commands was in peak form last summer winning a number of races including the $200,000 Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap (1300m) in Queensland which was her first run in the sunshine state.

Capital Commander has failed to win a race since but has been showing plenty of promise ahead of another trip to the Gold Coast this coming Magic Millions Race Day on Saturday January 12, 2013.

She has run two close seconds in her most recent runs and will look to end the winning drought on Saturday.

Two back she came within a short half-head of Quindnunc in the Listed The Nivision (1200m) at Royal Randwick before she carried a hefty 58kg to come within half a length of Lebrechaun in the Snake Gully Cup (1400m0 at Gundagai on November 16.

Originally accepted for two separate races at Rosehill on the weekend, one over 1200m and won over 1400m, Capital Commander has been scratched from the shorter event where she was allocated 60.5kg and will take on the likes of Uate and Irish Jig in the $85,000 Parramatta Leagues Club Handicap (1400m) with 56.5kg.

Olive is hoping she will finally get to add another win to her record there even though it looks to be a tougher field before continuing onto the Magic Millions race.

“If we went to the other race I would have had to claim and I’d prefer a senior jockey on,” Olive explained.

“Her whole campaign has been leading to the Magic Millions and this will be her last start before that race so I wanted a senior rider and less weight.

“I’d also rather start her over 1400 and come back to the 1300, rather than step up in trip.

“It’s probably a harder race but the conditions suit her a bit better.

“We worked out that a month between runs is when she performs best and since we’ve started doing that she hasn’t run a bad race.”
