Werribee Cup 2012 – Nominations Released

Thirteen horses have been nominated for the Listed $120,000 2012 Werribee Cup (2600m) which will take place this Sunday.

Unusual Suspect

Sandown Cup third placegetter Unusual Suspect has been nominated for the Werribee Cup

Among the nominated horses is King Diamond who will be out to back up his tough win in the Ballarat Cup late last month.

The Jarrod McLean-trained gelding is a dual stakes winner but it will be no easy task to add a third Listed victory to his resume this weekend.

With a chance to exact revenge on King Diamond for a narrow Ballarat Cup defeat is Pelicano who has been in terrific form this preparation with four top four finishes from four outings.

Seven-year-old stayer I’m Jake was second in the Listed Ansett Classic at Mornington in September and is coming off a solid fourth to Ibicenco in the Listed Sandown Cup.

The most experienced runner in the field is nine-year-old Unusual Suspect who was well beaten when 21st in the Melbourne Cup but showed he may still have some racing left in him when finishing third in the Sandown Cup.

The veteran has raced an incredible 70 times and scored nine victories and 15 minor placings on his way to a prize pool of more than $1.5 million.

Unusual Suspect is one of two Mick Kent-trained horses nominated with the other being the in-form You Think So.

The consistent five-year-old is chasing a third consecutive win after scoring back-to-back wins over 3000m at Moonee Valley in recent weeks.

Top trainer Peter Moody has entered Almodovar but the gelding will have to turn around his recent form to be competitive as he has struggled in five starts since opening his campaign in October.

Other horses included in Werribee Cup nominations are last-start winner Lucky Angel and the Mark Houlahan-trained Dark Note.
