Small Eight-Horse Field for 2012 Tasmanian Stakes

Just eight milers have been accepted for the Tasmanian Stakes 2012 at Hobart Racecourse this Saturday, the weight-for-age clash one of the first black type features of the latest Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

Set to run as Hobart Race 6 at 4:05pm (local time), this year’s edition of the $90,000 Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) may feature just eight hopefuls but there’s plenty of depth in the line-up.

The top-rated of the Tasmanian Stakes acceptors is the defending champ and last year’s Tasmanian Horse of the Year Geegees Blackflash who has drawn wide in barrier seven, regular rider Peter Mertens in the saddle.

John Luttrell’s popular Clangalang gelding won the Tasmanian Stakes 12 months ago three runs into a five straight winning streak that went on to include a six length romp in the Summer Cup (2100m) and the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2200m) before their brave second to Prevailing in the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m).

The now six-year-old resumed with a disappointing 10th to It’s Crunch Time in the Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Launceston on November 21 where they carried a hefty 60kg to the winner’s 56kg.

Geegees Blackflash showed nice improvement two weeks later however getting back to WFA to snare their 12th career win last time out on December 5 over 1400m back at Launceston in the inaugural Conquering WFA.

“In hindsight I probably should not have run him in the Newmarket because he had missed a couple of important gallops and we had to treat him to remove boils that had surfaced on his shoulder and rump about 10 days prior to the Newmarket,” Luttrell said after their last start victory.

“We ran him and it did no harm but tonight he was feeling much better in himself and the way he gunned down that super mare (Rebel Bride) was proof that we have got him right back on track.”

Also in the mix again is last year’s Tasmanian Stakes third place-getter Dream Pedlar, the veteran West Quest eight-year-old resuming off a lengthy spell not having run since their seventh in the Launceston Cup.

Dream Pedlar (barrier eight – Craig Newitt) is one of two Tasmanian Stakes hopes for Longford horseman Troy Blacker along with Dream Flyer (barrier five – Ibrahim Gundogdu) who has been in top form this time in.

The Savoire Virvre gelding, third to Geegees Blackflash in the Hobart Cup back in February, has had three runs this time in including a close second when defeated just a long neck in the Newmarket Handicap.

They were last seen crossing third to Geegees Blackflash on December 5 at Launceston and are another horse suited to the WFA conditions of Saturday’s clash.

Prevailing is the other big name entry for this year’s Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes, David & Scott Brunton’s Secret Savings gelding having beaten Geegees Blackflash in the Launceston Cup last summer but how has been hit and miss since spending plenty of time on the sidelines.

They were last seen running dead last in the Clarence Cup Handicap (1400m) at Hobart on November 25 where they failed to handle their 60kg impost crossing 15 lengths off the lightly-weighted winner My Temptation (50.5kg).
