Single Shapes Up for 2013 Doncaster Mile

Craig Carmody’s super consistent galloper Single will gear up for a new season return targeting the Doncaster Mile 2013 in the autumn when they trial at Royal Randwick this coming Monday.

Single will trial on Monday ahead of an autumn return targeting the 2013 Doncaster Mile

The High Chaparral five-year-old boasts six wins from 10 starts to date including their last three straight back at the start of the year earning over $244,000 so far, not a bad return for connections who paid $60,000 for them at the 2011 William Inglis and Song Sydney Autumn Thoroughbred Sales.

Lightly-raced for their age Single hasn’t raced since their first stakes success in the Listed Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill back in March, their only other black type assignment being a distant eight to Shootoff in the 2011 Queensland Derby.

They will get their chance to try again for an elite level trophy during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival next year however with Carmody naming the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) at Randwick Racecourse on April 20 as their major goal in 2013.

The Doncaster Mile was originally in their sights this year but Single broke a cannon bone and had to have surgery to his off-hind leg which included the insertion of screws into the area.

To help prepare the galloper for their first-up run after such a lengthy stint on the sidelines Carmody will trial Single at their home track on Monday in the last of the morning over 1200m, the other notable entry in the hit-out being the Gai Waterhouse-trained Brisbane Cup winner Tullamore.

One person especially excited over the return of Single is jockey Nathan Berry, aboard for their five most recent runs.

Berry believes the break has done Single good and he’s in excellent condition heading into a Doncaster campaign.

“I couldn’t be any happier with him, he looks great, he’s definitely carrying a lot more condition than he ever has,” Berry said.

“He’s not as light-framed as he used to be. Even though he’s had that injury it doesn’t seem to be worrying him at all at the moment, it actually looks quite clean where they’ve done the operation.

“He’ll be coming back and he’ll be on the Doncaster campaign.”
