Macedonian Represents Moody in Perth Cup 2013

Victoria’s leading trainer Peter Moody has nominated for his veteran Zabeel seven-year-old Macedonian in the 2013 Perth Cup, the talented stayer adding another dimension to the New Year’s Day feature on January 1.

Of the 32 nominations for the $500,000 Group 1 Golden River Developments Perth Cup (2400m) this year four were interstate raiders including class galloper Macedonian.

A hefty $360,000 purchase as a yearling from New Zealand back in 2007, Macedonian has to date won five of their 31 career starts for over $416,000 in prize money.

Among their most notable performances are the 2010 Sandown Cup win and their close third when defeated under a length by Muir in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) in March of 2011.

While it has been a long time between drinks for Macedonian they did only just return from a 10 month spell when running a credible fifth at Caulfield on December 1 over 2000m, the galloper tipped to improve getting up to the mile and a half for the Perth Cup.

Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA) racing manger and chief handicapper David Hunter was blown away with the quality of the Perth Cup nominations this time and was especially pleased to have a horse of Macedonian’s rank in the mix.

“We’re delighted to have a stayer with Macedonian’s credentials in the cup,” Hunter said.

“In addition to winning the Sandown Cup, he’s been an Adelaide Cup third placegetter.

“Macedonian confirmed his class when runner-up in The Lexus at Flemington’s spring carnival last year.

“There was a lot of merit in his performances to finish fifth in a Sydney Cup and eighth in a Caulfield Cup.”

The other Eastern state visitors featuring in the Perth Cup nominations for 2013 are then the John Thompson-trained Shamardashing, multiple Group winning European import Doctor Fremantle and the Tony McEvoy-trained Adelaide champ Pelicano coming off a close second in the Ballarat Cup.

2013 Perth Cup weights will be released on December 24 which is when late entries for the classic remain open till.
