Calaway Gal Stakes 2012 Field Released

A 12-filly field has been released for the 2012 Calaway Gal Stakes at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse this Saturday, the females-only juvenile feature one of two key lead-up races on the card for two-year-olds targeting the 2013 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Missy Longstocking

Missy Longstocking heads the 2012 Calaway Gal Stakes field for this Saturday

Set to run as Eagle Farm Race 3 at 1:30pm (AEST) the $100,000 Listed Gaythorne RSL Calaway Gal Stakes (1000m) is shaping up as an intriguing showdown between six fillies with previous race experience and the other half making their race debuts.

Heading the Calaway Gal Stakes field, the race named in honour of 2002 Golden Slipper winner Calaway Gal, is the Liam Birchley-trained Missy Longstocking in barrier five with Damian Browne to ride.

The untapped daughter of Sequalo is undefeated to date having won her opening two career starts by impressive margins.

On October 20 at the Toowoomba Cushion track she bolted over the 350m to win by six lengths before her huge seven length effort carrying 58kg to victory over 1000m at Eagle Farm on November 3.

The only other filly in the Calaway Gal Stakes field to have racked up a win previously is the Robert Heathcote-trained Greytfilly.

Drawn in gate eight for Saturday the Ferocity filly ran third on debut on October 13 before improving two weeks later to win a 2YO handicap over 1110m at Doomben by three lengths, Ryan Wiggins retaining the ride as the pair look to repeat the feat again on Saturday.

Other fillies with previous race experience then include the Tony Gollan-trained Global Dream (barrier two) coming off a good barrier trial win at Doomben, Chris Munce’s ride Maracoola drawn on the rails in barrier one, and the Gold Coast duo of Moroccan Rose (Gillian Heinrich) who ran second to Missy Longstockings on November 3 and Danehill Dancer two-year-old Jitterbug (Alain Bailey).

A number of the fillies in the Calaway Gal Stakes are Gold Coast-bound next month for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 12.

Also running at Eagle Farm on Saturday is the colts and geldings’ equivalent to the Calaway Gal, the $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) where Gillian Heinrich will saddle up the only previous winner – Eliminator.
