David Payne’s promising More Than Ready colt Regimental Pride will take their next step towards the 2013 Magic Millions Classic this Saturday when they race at Rosehill Gardens in a 2YO Handicap over 1100m.
The young colt debuted at Randwick back on October 6 running a disappointing ninth to Whittington in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) which is the first two-year-old race of the new season.
Improving next run Regimental Pride won seven days later at Rosehill over 1100m on a Slow (6) track, albeit by a narrow margin, and they will race for the first time since in a similar class race back at the Gardens.
Pride is hoping to see more improvement again from the horse who is being primed for a shot at the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m), the richest race of the summer season in Australia, at the Gold Coast on Saturday January 12, 2013.
They are certainly bred for success in the lucrative juvenile feature with their mother, Regimental Gal, having won the MM Classic as a two-year-old back in 2003.
If they run well on Saturday Regimental Pride will back up in the $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (1100m) at Wyong on Thursday December 20 before their date with the big one next month.
“He is ready for Saturday and if he takes the race well he will back up in the Wyong Millions race and then go to the Gold Coast,” Payne said.
“Regimental Pride needs the hit out before Wyong next week.
“Why not go around on Saturday? He can race for prize money for his owners rather than have a barrier trial.”
Another Magic Millions Classic-bound youngster making headlines is Chris Waller’s Street Sense filly Champagne Cath who caught the eye with a big win on debut at Rosehill last Saturday winning a 2YO open handicap by three and a half lengths.
Waller is confident Champagne Cath, named in honour of her owner Tony Arnold’s late wife Cath who died after an 11-year battle with breast cancer on Melbourne Cup Day last year, will make a better three-year-old he will give the youngster their chance this season too.
“She is a very athletic horse who will be better as a three-year-old,” Waller said.
“But she is in the Magic Millions and as long as she comes through OK she will get her chance there.”
