Exciting import Puissance De Lune has returned to work and is being targeted to kick off his next campaign at the 2013 Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival in March.
The Darren Weir-trained entire shot into 2013 Melbourne Cup favouritism and excited the racing community in November when he trounced a quality field by five lengths to win the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The Queen Elizabeth win came on the back of an eight-length Bendigo Cup victory that left star jockey Glen Boss in awe of the four-year-old.
The son of Shamardal had a four-week break at owner Gerry Ryan’s farm and Weir told Racing Victoria he is showing promising signs ahead of a likely first-up test in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 9.
“At this stage everything’s good and he’ll come back in the Blamey and then maybe run in the Easter Cup,” Weir said.
Follwing the Queen Elizabeth Stakes win, bookmakers rushed to install the Irish-bred galloper as favourite for next year’s $6.2 million Melbourne Cup.
Boss could not contain his excitement following the Queen Elizabeth win and was not shy in declaring him as a genuine Melbourne Cup contender.
“This horse gave me the feel of no horse I’ve ridden for a long time,” Boss said following the win.
“Oh my God, he’s got some acceleration. He’s come a long way very quickly.
The exciting stayer had just four starts, all in France, prior to arriving in Australia and boasts an impressive record of five wins from eight starts since arriving on Australian soil.
Weir said Puissance De Lune may also contest the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on March 30.
