Missy Longstocking Tops 2012 Calaway Gal Stakes Nominations

Liam Birchley’s gun young filly Missy Longstocking is the top-name entry for the Calaway Gal Stakes 2012 at Eagle Farm this Saturday, the race open to two-year-old fillies with many on the 2013 Magic Millions Classic path.

Missy Longstocking vies for her third straigt win in Saturday's Calaway Gal Stakes 2012

Sequalo filly Missy Longstocking is one of 16 early entries for the $100,000 Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1000m) this year and is sure to jump as the favourite following her stunning two career starts during the spring.

A six length winner on debut at Toowoomba over 850m in October, Missy Longstocking proved her potential on November 3 when taking out a fillies handicap over 1000m at Eagle Farm carrying 58kg to a sensational seven length victory.

“She’ll run on Saturday then have another start before the Magic Millions,” Birchley said.

Last Monday Missy Longstocking enjoyed an easy trial win over 820m at Doomben and Birchley is confident she has returned off her short break in good order.

“We galloped her Saturday and she’s done everything we have wanted so far,” he said.

“Obviously there’s plenty more in the tank, but she’s fit enough to race well this week.”

Another last start winner that blew away her competition who is nominated for Saturday’s Calaway Gal Stakes is the Robert Heathcote-trained Greytfilly.

The Ferocity two-year-old debuted when third at Doomben behind Octane Flyer before her big three length win over the same horse at the same track over 1110m on October 27.

Some of the other more notable chances among the nominations are Tony Gollan’s Fastnet Rock filly Global Dream racing for the first time since her second on debut at the start of October, the Alan Bailey-trained Danehill Dancer filly Jitterbug and Moroccan Rose from the Gold Coast stables of Gillian Heinrich who was the distant runner-up to Missy Longstocking on November 3.

Heinrich has been itching for a rematch with Missy Longstocking ever since her Charge Forward filly Moroccan Rose was left for dead as the hot favourite in her race debut, and she gets that in the Calaway Gal Stakes on Saturday.

“I’m not conceding to Missy Longstocking yet,” she said.

“Initially I was a bit disappointed. If they ran faster I could have understood it, but on what Moroccan Rose has shown me at home, I know she’s much better than that.

“So we put her straight out and hopefully she will show everyone her best this time in.”
