Liam Birchely’s evergreen Brisbane galloper Trajet will get his chance to match it against stakes class in Sydney this Saturday having been nominated for Rosehill’s 2012 Christmas Cup.
The Good Journey seven-year-old was one of 11 nominees for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Christmas Cup (2400m), the mile and a half handicap used as a lead-up for stayers heading towards the popular $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup over the same track and distance on Boxing Day.
While the big name Christmas Cup entries in the mix this year include ATC Cup winner Fiumicino and the horses that ran second and third behind him last start, King Utah and Moriarty, Eagle Farm-based Birchley believes Trajet also deserves his shot on Saturday.
A winner of six of their 37 starts to date the horse was a $3,500 bargain buy as a yearling back in 2007 and has earned their keep with $128,890 in prize money to date.
They have run top three in their four most recent runs, the last of which was a devastatingly close second to Poste Restante, considered one of the top 2012 Summer Cup fancies, over 2118m at Eagle Farm on the first of the month.
It is this good form that has Birchley eyeing the riches in Sydney, Trajet yet to race in Sydney.
The horse started their career in Melbourne however only joining Birchely in Queensland earlier this year.
Saturday will also be their first black type assignment and their new trainer hopes he can be competitive stepping up from restricted-class.
“It’s more about the way the horse is racing,” Birchley said.
“He’s stepped up at every run he’s had for me and I think he’s ready to run his best race since I’ve had him.
“Really, he deserves a shot at something better.”
Peter Robl has been booked for the Christmas Cup ride taking over from Chris Munce and instructions will be to have the horse on-pace as is their style.
“He seems to race best that way because he is such a good strider,” Birchley says.
“The fact he’s got such a big stride means he can get knotted up if he is back in a field.”
