Winter King after Atonement in Doveton Stakes 2012

After a first-up fourth at Flemington, this Saturday will see the Stephen Brown-trained Winter King look to break a two and a half year losing streak in the 2012 Doveton Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse.

Formerly prepared by David Hayes, One Cool Cat gelding Winter King hasn’t won a race since the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill back in August of 2010.

The now Flemington-based Brown, who took over the preparation of six-year-old Winter King earlier this year and who formerly trained in Darwin, is hoping that will change in the $120,000 Listed Doveton Stakes (1000m), the summer sprint running this weekend instead of its traditional January time-slot this season.

Winter King debuted for their new trainer on November 8 when they finished three lengths away fourth to General Truce in the Listed Fashions On The Field (1000m) where their run was hampered by a wide barrier 11 of 13 draw.

Things went amiss for their second-up run too when the barriers at Moonee Valley two weeks back went up early and Winter King jumped away, eventually scratched from the event when the jockey failed to pull them up.

Brown is hoping for better luck barrier-wise this time in the Doveton who he rates as the one to beat in the black type.

“He’s 100 per cent ready for it,” Brown said.

“I think this is the right sort of race for him. I don’t think there’s much in there that can beat him.

“I think he’s a genuine Group-type horse. He’s run in some really nice races without winning.”

There were 16 nominations taken for the Doveton Stakes this year with other notable early entries including the Peter Moody-trained Kulgrinda coming off a win at Moonee Valley over the 1000m, Mick Price’s lightly-raced Fastnet Rock mare Halle Rocks who has won four of their six starts to date, and the Mark Kavanagh-trained 60.5kg top-weight Catapulted who hasn’t raced since finishing dead last when beaten 16 lengths by superstar Black Caviar in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in Adelaide back in May.
