This Saturday on Kingston Town Classic Day in WA Gary Kennewell’s honest South Australian galloper Conservatorium will have the advantage of a local hoop in the saddle when Steven Parnham jumps aboard for the AJ Scahill Stakes 2012.
Belmont-based Royal Academy five-year-old Conservatorium travelled over to WA last start where they ran a credible fifth when beaten only two and a half lengths by the undefeated winner Barakey as a $60 roughie in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).
The gelding, a winner of six of their 19 career starts to date, backs up at Ascot this Saturday at the Festival of Perth Racing’s final Group 1 race meeting in the day’s major support race – the $125,000 Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m).
Having had a run at the track and distance, and with a step back in class, they are expected to be competitive once again this weekend.
Their trainer also believes they will benefit from a slower pace in the AJ Scahill than the hectic pace in the Winterbottom which worked against their racing style.
“I wouldn’t imagine the pace would be as hot in the Scahill as the other day,” Kennewell said.
“Conservatorium is versatile and can lead if he needs to but I would prefer him to be on the pace.”
For their run in the Winterbottom Conservatorium was ridden by Adelaide jockey Joe Bowditch who travelled over for the ride.
Kennewell however has sourced a Perth hoop for the AJ Scahill on Saturday with Steven Parnham, son of trainer Neville Parnham, booked for the ride – Parnham having partnered with the horse for a number of track gallops since their arrival in Perth last month.
“Steven has been riding the horse in his work and he rides him very well,” Kennwell said.
Conservatorium is one of two Group rides for Parnham on the day who will also partner with second favourite in the $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), dual defending champion Playing God.
