Monton will defend his title in the 2012 Festival Stakes in Sydney this Saturday

A total of 26 gallopers were nominated for this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Festival Stakes (1500m), Catbird six-year-old Monton the 59kg top-weight of the entries.

Out to improve on their last start sixth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick back on October 6, Monton hasn’t won a race since taking out the Festival Stakes – Villiers Stakes double in December last year.

Following Monton in the Festival Stakes weights is then Chris Waller’s 2008 Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour (58.5kg) who hasn’t raced since their distant sixth to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) when carrying 59kg in the wet at Eagle Farm in early June.

Waller has also nominated for Pins six-year-old Thumbtacks who has never raced in stakes company over their 42-start career to date and Lonhro gelding Tromso coming off a close second at the track over 1400m from November 24.

The horse that beat Tromso home last start meanwhile, the Peter Snowden-trained Commands mare Classics is one of four last start winners nominated for the Festival Stakes on Saturday.

The others are Matthew Smith’s Al Maher mare Cabernet who beat home Skyerush in the Listed Summodn Stakes (1500m) at Sandown on November 17, the Bede Murray-trained Hawkesbury Gold Cup champ Darci Be Good and Scone galloper Mahisara who was impressive when putting three lengths on Morant to win the Group 3 Sandown Stakes over 1500m last time out.

Other notable hopefuls then include the Anthony Cummings-trained Shadows In The Sun who resumed with a good first-up second over 1200m at Rosehill on November 17, Snowden’s Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Galah and the in-form Keith’s Legacy who won at the track and distance two back against lesser rivals.

The 2012 Festival Stakes final field and barrier draw are due for release on Wednesday and will be published right here at Races.com.au.
