Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Ace Sydney trainer Chris Waller is full of confidence heading into the 2012 ATC Cup (Frank Underwood Cup) with the punters’ pick Moriarty who is after their fourth win from their past six starts.
Topping the bookmaker.com.au markets for the $100,000 Listed ATC Cup (2200m) at a quote of $2.70, Clodovil gelding Moriarty has been in excellent form this time in and will look to continue that with their first stakes win down under when they race for the third consecutive Saturday.
The European import has been racing for Waller in Australia since April of this year and the ATC Cup will be their maiden black type assignment.
After three straight wins at Randwick in September and October Moriarty has run two good seconds at their two most recent starts.
The first was to Levi’s Choice in a 1900m handicap on November 17 after which they backed up last weekend to run second to the Bjorn Baker-trained Cantonese, a surprise non-acceptor for the ATC Cup on Saturday, in a Benchmark 88 over 2000m at Rosehill.
Moriarty will carry the same weight (57kg) this weekend at Warwick Farm from their nice barrier four draw, jockey Corey Brown reuniting with the galloper after Alysha Collett rode them last start and despite having had so much racing in the past few weeks Waller likes them for the win.
“He looks very well placed,” Waller said.
“He’s backing up three weeks in a row but he’s the type of horse to handle it.
“He’s in great shape and has come through last week’s run very well.
“It was a very good run last week. He was just beaten by an in-form horse and we had a big weight to carry.
“He’s had five runs this preparation for three wins and two good seconds and Saturday would be the icing on the cake.”
The other top fancy for the ATC Cup this year is veteran Zabeel nine-year-old Fiumicino, the classy old galloper paying $4.80 to improve on their last start third in the Bendigo Cup.
The ATC Cup kicks off the Sydney Summer Racing Series which continues with the $100,000 Christmas Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on December 15 before the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) headlines the Boxing Day Races.
Waller named the latter, the 2012 Summer Cup, as a possibility for Moriarty but that they may be looking for a break after the ATC Cup.
“He’s backing-up three weeks in a row on Saturday so we would need to just back off him after this,” Waller said.
