A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Quinton Scott’s rising nine-year-old Another Prelate may be getting on in age but the evergreen veteran’s recent good form is sure to see them jump one of the top fancies in Sunday’s Wodonga Cup 2012 in country Victoria.
This year marks the 80th edition of the $80,000 Wodonga Gold Cup (1590) which has drawn a final field of 12 smart gallopers to mark the milestone.
One of the big name entries in the mix is Lord Vain eight-year-old Another Prelate who will line up at the track for the first time at career start number 38.
Another Prelate has been in flying form this time in with three top three finishes, most recently a blistering four and a half-length victory over the Mornington mile in the Peninsula Cup.
On Sunday they will shoot for back-to-back cup wins when they jump from the extreme outside gate (12) carrying a hefty 59kg, a win in which will add another $48,000 to their prize money won – the barrier definitely an obstacle.
“He’s been a great old horse for me. You have a look at his breeding, well he’s barely bred well enough to be a stock horse but it just shows you, all he wants to do is win,” Scott said of the $170,915 earner.
“Lots of those millions dollar horses retire maidens.
“It won’t be easy (from the barrier) but he’s done well since Mornington and with a bit of luck getting some cover, he’ll be around the mark again.”
Scott may be based in Mornington but he certainly has strong family ties to the Wodonga Cup having grown up in Benalla with his father having won the race with Striking Power and his grandfather also a Wodonga Cup winning trainer with another galloper many years ago.
“I’ve got a bit of history up that way and trained in Benalla originally so it would be great to go up there and win the Wodonga Cup,” Scott said.
Top-weight and the real veteran of the Wodonga Gold Cup field meanwhile is the Peter White-trained Jungle Ruler.
With 60kg the Lion Hunter nine-year-old is drawn one inside of Another Prelate and will likely be at juicy odds after their disappointing last start ninth in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) when beaten nearly 16 lengths a fortnight ago.
Along with Another Prelate the other early favourite for the Wodonga Cup 2012 trophy looks to be the Brian Cox-trained Grandera gelding Murdoch’s Joy.
Lightly-raced with just 14 starts to their name, Murdoch’s Joy will be third-up on Sunday most recently seen running a devastatingly close second when defeated a short half-head by Aces And Angels in the Euroa Cup (1206m) at Benalla on November 11.
They carried 60kg on that occasion and are sure to appreciate the drop back to 54kg for the Wodonga Cup.
Cox will be represented by three horses in total in Sunday’s feature as he vies for his incredible 12th win in the classic with Murdoch’s Joy joined by stablemates This Cat’s Magic (barrier five) who comes off a close last start win at Wangaratta and Clangalang mare Minnie Downs (barrier nine).
Other notable hopefuls with a genuine chance on Sunday then include David Hayes’ seven-year-old Danewin mare Manila Jewel who will appreciate the drop back in class after running sixth in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day, Zabisco and Regular Aussie.
