Moriarty Heads Frank Underwood Cup 2012 Odds

Chris Waller’s consistent English import Moriarty has opened top of the markets for the 2012 Frank Underwood Cup at Warwick Farm this Saturday after their last-start conqueror chose not to accept for the handicap clash.

A winner of their opening three starts this time in, Clodovil five-year-old Moriarty has run second in their two most recent starts over 1900 and 2000m respectively at Rosehill.

Last time out on November 24 the gelding came within one and a quarter lengths of Cantonese in a benchmark 88, an effort Waller hopes they can improve on in the $100,000 ATC Cup (2200m) – formerly known as the Frank Underwood Cup – this Saturday.

The ATC Frank Underwood Cup drew a final field of just eight hopefuls this year with Moriarty drawn nicely in barrier four with Corey Brown to ride.

They head the current Frank Underwood Cup betting markets too with original nominee Cantonese not accepted to back up, Morarity paying $2.70 to score their maiden stakes success.

Group placed back in their native Britain Saturday will be the galloper’s first black type assignment since joining Waller’s Sydney operation earlier this year.

In a wide open market there are then four other single-figure fancies to take out the ATC Cup with:

  • #1 Fiumicino ($4.80) – Evergreen nine-year-old coming off a (distant) third to tear away winner Puissance De Lune in the Bendigo Cup, carried just 55kg then and go up to the 59kg topweight here which they need to handle – do give the favourite only 2kg however – BIG WEIGHT
  • #5 Ward ($6.50) – O’Reilly four-year-old coming off a last start Hawkesbury win over the 2000m, lightly-raced having just their 10th start here and need to step up to the 2200m for the first time, breeding says that’ll be okay – DISTANCE TEST
  • #4 Fromelles ($7) – John Sargent’s Kiwi mare has had three spring runs in Sydney, the first two were disappointing but this one’s a genuine stayer and when she got up to the 1900m on November 17 she ran a brave third in the race Moriarty finished runner-up to Levi’s Choice in – FORM AROUND THE FAVOURITE
  • #6 Dreamworker ($7) – Local David Pfieffer-trained Encosta De Lago mare came within a short half-head of victory over the mile and a half at Rosehill on Melbourne Cup Day, will relish getting back to Warwick Farm and down to the 2200m here – SHARPER OVER 200m SHORTER

Following closely at a quote of $12 are then Summer – Christmas Cup hopeful King Utah and the Tim Martin-trained Scouting Wide before six-year-old Nowra galloper Watertight, coming off a lower class win at Gosford over 2100m, rounds out the Frank Underwood field and markets paying $21.
