Warwick Farm trainer Gary Portelli is looking towards the 2013 Golden Slipper next autumn with his untapped two-year-old All The Talk who is set to have just their second career run in Sydney this weekend.
The Stratum colt debuted at Rosehill on November 17 and ran a brave third to the Gerald Ryan-trained Charlie Boy in the ATC Membership on Sale Now Handicap (1100m), a race Portelli had hoped they would win.
On Saturday they will race again, accepted for the first at their home track at Warwick Farm – the $85,000 Warwick Farm 2YO Plate (1000m), and they will have a couple of gear changes to get the best out of them in their last run this time in.
“I’m going to experiment with a tongue tie and with winkers on Saturday,” Portelli said, believing their loss last start could have been partly due to their air supply being short during the run.
“I thought we had them at the top of the straight (last start) and it looked like his condition gave out.
“That might have been a combination of his condition and possibly he might have cut his air off with his tongue.
“If he puts it together at his next start, if the tongue tie works, he should be able to get to the corner and then dash.”
One of only three horses in the field to have had a previous run, All The Talk is drawn in barrier five of eight with Blake Shinn to ride and the youngster will be sent out for a spell following Saturday’s run.
While Portelli isn’t expecting too much from the $40,000 William Inglis and Son 2012 Sydney Classic Yearling Sales purchase just yet, he is hopeful of improvement heading towards next year’s Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Portelli is hoping they develop into a nice juvenile that can go all the way to the $3.5 million Group 1 Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 6, 2013.
“I’m hoping he might be a (Golden) Slipper horse yet,” Portelli said.
There were just over 1000 first acceptors for the 2013 Golden Slipper with second acceptances due out on February 5.
