Academus Spelled Ahead of Gold Coast Guineas 2013

Peter Snowden’s last start WA Guineas winner Academus will be sent to the paddock after their eye-catching effort last Saturday being saved for a new year campaign targeting the 2013 Gold Coast Guineas in Queensland next May.

Peter Snowden's Golden Rose winner Albrecht will target the Australian Guineas 2013

The Lonhro gelding improved on their second-up fourth in a black type over 1400m at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day to hold on in a narrow finish to win the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) over in Perth last weekend.

It was a brave effort for the Sydneysider who previously ran a game third to Sizzling in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm during the winter.

Snowden hopes that after a well-earned break that will span for around eight weeks the young gun, who arrived home from Perth on Wednesday, will come back in even better form towards the end of autumn.

Having also run second to Sizzling in both the Group 2 Champagne Classic and Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes earlier this year, Snowden also hopes Academus can thrive in the sunshine state once more when they head towards the $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) on May 4, 2013.

Snowden and connections at Darley are in fact targeting a number of the major Guineas next year with Golden Rose winner Albrecht to head to Melbourne for the $600,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 2 and Rose runner-up Epaulette, last seen running a brave third to All Too Hard in the Caulfield Guineas, to remain in Sydney for the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) a fortnight later.

“Albrecht is in work and he’ll go to Melbourne in probably another six or seven weeks and I’ll aim him at the races towards the Australian Guineas third-up,” Snowden said.

“Epaulette will stay here in Sydney and race in the races leading up to the Randwick Guineas.”
