Jockey Peter Robl has drawn on his own experiences to give an assessment of Damien Oliver’s future in the industry following the recent betting scandal.
Oliver was banned from riding for 10 months after he was found guilty of placing a $10,000 bet on a rival horse, as well as using his phone illegally in the jockey’s room prior to the race.
The top jockey, who rode the Group 1 Thousand Guineas and Emirates Stakes winner this past spring, will be back in the saddle for the 2013 spring racing carnival.
Robl, who himself faced a 12 month ban for illegal betting on races, predicts Oliver will be back to his best in no time.
“If I can come back and do what I’ve done I’m sure Damien won’t have any problems,” Robl said.
“It is tough to deal with all the publicity and the talk at the time but if you stick your head down and bum up when you come back people give you another chance and are more than happy to help you out.
“It comes down to how you approach the return, it is about building the respect and trust back, hard work does that.
“Damien is a world-class rider, I don’t think he will have any trouble.”
Yesterday was a year since Robl returned to the saddle and he has continuously exceeded his own expectations.
“I would have been happy to ride 50 or 60 winners, to think that I’ve been able to virtually double that is surprising,” Robl said.
