Dreamworker Chases 2012 Frank Underwood Cup

On Saturday David Pfieffer’s progressive mare Dreamworker will step up in class and contest her first stakes race for her new trainer when she runs in the Frank Underwood Cup 2012 at Warwick Farm Racecourse.

Formerly prepared by fellow Sydney trainer Grahame Begg who ran her in a number of black type races as a three-year-old including her distant 10th to Absolutely in the 2011 AJC Oaks, the now five-year-old daughter of Encosta De Lago joined Pfieffer’s stables earlier this year.

She has had seven runs for the Warwick Farm-based horseman but is yet to win a race, her best finish being a devastatingly close second when beaten a nose by Slivovitz in a 2400m handicap last start at Rosehill on November 6.

Pfieffer will now set her on her biggest test to date hoping to break a lengthy 12 month winning drought opting to accept Dreamworker for the $100,000 Listed ATC Frank Underwood Cup (2200m).

The mare is currently also accepted for a 2300m race at Newcastle on Wednesday but will be scratched from the event in favour of the ATC Cup on Saturday in a bold move by her optimistic trainer.

“If she goes to the midweek race she just about wins but the owner is keen to chase some sort of black type,” Pfieffer said speaking of Marquee Stud’s Mark Alati.

“Mark has got a small band of mares … decent mares.

“It’s important to get stakes results for him. It’s a throw at the stumps on Saturday but it’s worth a go.”

Likely favourite for the Frank Underwood Cup will be the Bjorn Baker-trained Cantonese coming off a Rosehill win from last Saturday while other top fancies are sure to include the Hawkes-trained veteran nine-year-old Fiumicino last seen running third in the Bendigo Cup and Moriarty from the Chris Waller stables who ran second to Cantonese last start.

“Chris Waller usually dominates these races but he’s only got one runner (in Moriarty) so it’s not as hard as what it might be which made the decision a bit easier,” Pfieffer said.
