King Diamond Salutes In 2012 Ballarat Cup

Yesterday’s 2012 Ballarat Cup has been won by King Diamond at Ballarat Racecourse.

The six-year-old was able to turn his form right around for the $200,000 Ballarat Cup, after placing ninth in his past two race starts this preparation.

King Diamond won the Listed Ballarat Cup by a nose in front of Pelicano, who finished second, and Exceptionally, who continued her frustrating spring with a third placing.

Trainer Jarrod McLean was thrilled to have scored a win in the 2012 Ballarat Cup in what was only his second start as trainer of the Danewin gelding.

King Diamond was originally trained by Mark Kavanagh, before being sent to Peter Moody.

However, his biggest win came under the guidance of Warnambool trainer Mclean, who attributes his success to training sessions at the beach.

“It’s a big thrill and an advertisement for the beach at Warrnambool,” McLean said.

King Diamond won the 2012 Ballarat Cup on Sunday.

“He came to me from two very good trainers in Mark Kavanagh and Peter Moody.

“I backed right off him to get him feeling better.

“These old horses can gallop. You’ve just got to get them sound and the beach is the key.”

Owner Rob Slade confirmed that the switch of trainer was made to combat King Diamond’s joint problems.

“He was feeling his joints and had a few niggly problems and Peter said he would be better off trained at the beach,” Slade said.
